This section comprises 3 lectures, each lasting 3 to 5 minutes. For every 3-minute lecture, 6 questions will be posed. Additionally, 2 conversations with 5 questions each will be included. Note-taking during this 36-minute test is essential for swift response. In total, there are 28 questions in this section.

Speaking Test Breakdown

Recognized as the highest-scoring section, the speaking test evaluates language usage, delivery, and topic presentation. It includes 1 Independent topic with a preparation time of 15 to 30 seconds and a response time of 45 to 60 seconds. Three integrated tasks—Read/Listen/Speak—with a preparation time of 15 to 30 seconds and a response time of 45 to 60 seconds each. The speaking section comprises a total of 4 questions and lasts for 16 minutes.

Writing Test Structure

This section requires effective writing of 2 paragraphs, emphasizing appropriate language and error-free grammar. The integrated task of Read/Listen/Write spans 20 minutes (Reading: 3 min; Listening: 2 min; Writing: 15 min). Additionally, there is a Writing for an Academic Discussion task lasting 10 minutes. The writing section consists of a total of 2 questions, with a duration of 30 minutes.

TOEFL scores range from 0 to 120.

  • Above 90: Excellent
  • 82: Average
  • 100 – 110: Good
  • 83 – 90: Above average
  • 0 – 81: Below average

Most universities consider a score above 90 or higher, which showcase the high level of English proficiency. Many international universities require 90 – 100 points or 100 total points on the iBT or 580 or 600 on the PBT.

Your TOEFL score is valid for 2 years from the date you took the exam. There is no upper age limit for attempting TOEFL. You can write the exam as many times as you need. You can try the test with a 12-day gap in between.
